    Mamie Garcia

Ms. Mamie Garcia has served the city in community, political, and public relations activities for 39 years. She is a direct link between the Chief of Police and community leaders to promote positive relations, dialogue, and actions that will involve all ethnic, civic and church groups in crime prevention. From 1974 to 1978, she served as Director for various Gulf Coast Community Services. She has organized youth councils, refurbished an abandoned building to create a senior citizen center and conducted multiple outreach studies to identify community needs related to public safety and quality of life. Ms. Garcia is married, the mother of six, and the grandmother of seven and guardian of her youngest sister.

    Gloria Alvarez

Gloria Alvarez is a native Houstonian whose career ambitions are as diverse as her community involvement. Her efforts to inspire change and aid others include making calls to help those displaced by Katrina, preparing literatures to hand out for a health fair, stuffing backpacks for students in need or soliciting funds to help those in financial crisis. This year Ms. Alvarez was selected to serve as President of Hispanic Women in Leadership, a role eloquently accents her nomination for Houston’s Inspiring Hispanic women.

    Shannon Langrand

Shannon Langrand inspires everyone with the passion she devotes to her family, work, and service as a board member of the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans. Shannon contributes to nonprofit agencies providing health services to disadvantaged communities. She also managed a successful pilot HIV-prevention project for high-risk Hispanic women and worked as a liaison with Spanish-language media for a women’s health care organization. She was the fundraising director for Sylvia Garcia, helping her raise a record-setting one million dollars in her successful campaign to become the first Latina Harris County Commissioner.

    Nancy Jimenez

Nancy enjoys taking an active role in her community. She volunteers at the Tejano Center for Community Concerns and is a member of the East End Chamber of Commerce and La Camara de Empresarios Latinos de Houston. She helps to teach a First-time Home Buyer course on the weekend and she participates in Child Safety Day Events. She also enjoys mentoring students at local schools, and this year she began serving as Director of Mentorship for Hispanic Women in Leadership. She initiated a Mentorship program at Raul Yzaguirre School for Success with cooperation of members of NHPO and HWIL.

With the help of family and friends of St. Joseph Catholic Church parishioners, she founded MECA, and organization that has provided a positive alternative for the betterment of at risk youth in the Houston area. It never surprising for individuals to visit MECA and ask directly for “Mrs. Alice”, knowing they will receive a helping hand in return. Whether it is casual conversation, a ride around the corner, food, or counsel, Mrs. Alice is there to offer it , to whomever is in need her services.
